Delhi HC Refuses Stay on Gardasil HPV Vaccination for 14-Year-Old Girls

The Delhi High Court declined to grant an interim stay on the administration of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine Gardasil to 14-year-old girls under the Central Government's nationwide immunization program. The court observed that public health initiatives aimed at preventive oncology carry strong scientific backing and public interest benefits.

The legal challenge raised concerns over potential adverse side effects and informed consent protocols regarding mass Gardasil administration. However, the bench noted that the vaccine had undergone extensive clinical trials and received clearance from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) and technical advisory bodies.

Cervical cancer ranks as the second most common cancer among women in India, accounting for nearly 1.2 lakh new cases and over 75,000 deaths annually. The HPV vaccine targets high-risk strains (primarily HPV 16 and 18) responsible for over 70 percent of cervical cancer cases, with the Centre aiming for target coverage under Universal Immunization guidelines.
