The Union Water Resources Ministry reiterated its official position in the Lok Sabha regarding Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu balancing reservoir project across the Cauvery river, stating that clearance requires formal concurrence from lower riparian Tamil Nadu.

Karnataka proposes constructing a 67,161 million cubic feet (mcft) capacity reservoir at Mekedatu in Ramanagara district to generate 400 MW of hydroelectric power and secure drinking water for Bengaluru. Tamil Nadu strongly opposes the project, maintaining that it violates the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal’s final award and Supreme Court directives by altering natural flows.
