Senior military medical officer Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja has been named as the new Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS). He will officially assume charge of India’s top military medical role on August 31, 2026.
The Director General Armed Forces Medical Services serves as the administrative head of the integrated medical services spanning the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. The office reports directly to the Ministry of Defence on all policy matters concerning military healthcare.
Air Marshal Thareja is a highly decorated clinician and military administrator with expertise in internal medicine and gastroenterology. As DGAFMS, he will oversee major military hospitals, medical research councils, medical evacuations, and healthcare delivery for millions of serving personnel, veterans, and dependents.
