Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen calls for implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to ensure gender equity.
Prominent author Taslima Nasreen publicly advocated for the swift implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across India and the broader subcontinent. Speaking at a public forum, she emphasized that a common secular civil framework is essential to eliminate gender discrimination embedded in traditional personal laws.
Article 44 of the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP) in Part IV of the Indian Constitution directs the State to endeavor to secure a Uniform Civil Code for citizens throughout the territory of India. Currently, Goa is the only state with a historic common civil code, while Uttarakhand recently enacted its own UCC legislation.
Debates surrounding UCC center on balancing personal religious freedoms guaranteed under Article 25 with constitutional principles of equality (Article 14) and non-discrimination (Article 15).
Uniform Civil Code is one of the most critical topics for UPSC Polity & Governance (GS Paper II) and Mains essay papers, as well as constitutional law questions in competitive exams.
