In Brief
PM inaugurates two transmission projects and lays foundation for renewable energy corridor in Andhra Pradesh valued at ₹5,550 crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated two major transmission projects developed by POWERGRID (Power Grid Corporation of India Limited) and laid the foundation stone for a comprehensive renewable energy transmission corridor valued at ₹5,550 crores in Andhra Pradesh. These projects represent significant infrastructure investment in India's energy transition and electrical grid modernisation, particularly targeting renewable energy integration.
The renewable energy corridor project is designed to facilitate large-scale evacuation of solar and wind power generated in southern India, particularly from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regions, to consumption centres across the nation. The corridor involves high-capacity, high-voltage transmission lines with advanced technology to minimize transmission losses. POWERGRID's expansion is crucial for achieving India's renewable energy targets of 500 GW by 2030.
The projects address the critical challenge of integrating distributed renewable energy into the national grid while ensuring grid stability and reducing transmission congestion. Recent capacity additions in renewable energy have exceeded demand growth in certain regions, creating evacuation bottlenecks. These transmission corridors resolve that constraint. The ₹5,550 crore investment reflects India's commitment to green energy infrastructure as per NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) targets and COP26 commitments.
For UPSC candidates, this exemplifies India's infrastructure strategy for energy security and climate goals. Expect questions on renewable energy transmission, grid modernisation, POWERGRID's role, evacuation challenges in renewable energy systems, and the financial mechanisms supporting green infrastructure. This also connects to Make in India objectives (domestic equipment manufacturing), employment generation, and the synchronisation of generation and distribution assets.
