Indian theoretical physicist Deepak Dhar has been awarded the prestigious 2026 Dirac Medal for contributions to statistical physics.
Indian theoretical physicist Professor Deepak Dhar has been awarded the prestigious 2026 Dirac Medal by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). The international honor recognizes his foundational contributions to statistical physics, self-organized criticality, and stochastic processes over a distinguished research career spanning several decades.
The Dirac Medal is given annually in honor of Paul Dirac, one of the 20th century's greatest theoretical physicists. Awarded on Dirac's birthday, August 8, the medal honors scientists who have made major contributions to theoretical physics, mathematics, and quantum mechanics. Notably, Nobel laureates are ineligible for the Dirac Medal, highlighting its distinction for theoretical research prior to Nobel recognition.
Professor Dhar, who previously received the Boltzmann Medal in 2022 as the first Indian recipient, worked extensively on exact solutions of lattice models and phase transitions. His mathematical formulations of abelian sandpile models remain fundamental benchmarks in statistical mechanics.
This development is highly important for Science & Technology current affairs across competitive exams. Candidates should note the award, its background, key scientific terminology like statistical mechanics, and Indian achievements in fundamental basic sciences.
