In Brief
Marked the end of an era in Indian historiography with the demise of modern history scholar Prof. Sumit Sarkar.
Renowned historian and author Professor Sumit Sarkar passed away at the age of 87 in New Delhi. A former professor at Delhi University, Sarkar was widely regarded as one of modern India’s foremost Marxist and Subaltern school historians, whose academic contributions reshaped the study of the Indian national movement, socio-religious reforms, and labor history.
Born in 1939, Sumit Sarkar completed his education at Presidency College, Kolkata, before embarking on an academic career spanning several decades at Saint Stephen's College and Delhi University. His landmark publication, "Modern India: 1885–1947", published in 1983, remains a foundational textbook for civil services aspirants and university historians across the country.
Sarkar’s seminal work focused on popular movements, subaltern politics, and popular culture in Bengal during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Key books authored by him include "The Swadeshi Movement in Bengal 1903–1908", "Writing Social History", and "Beyond Nationalist Frames", which critically evaluated the interaction between colonialism, nationalism, and mass mobilisation.
The loss of Prof. Sarkar highlights the rich history of academic debate surrounding India's freedom struggle and socio-political evolution. Aspirants must note his key literary works and analytical frameworks for Modern Indian History questions in Prelims, as well as historiography perspectives required for UPSC Mains History optional and General Studies Paper I.
