Stargazers worldwide are observing the annual peak of the Perseid meteor shower, accompanied this year by a rare early-morning alignment of six planets—Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, and Saturn. The celestial event offers a significant observational window for astronomers and space enthusiasts globally.
The Perseids are light trails caused by space debris shed by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, a massive icy body orbiting the Sun once every 133 years. First observed historically over 2,000 years ago, the meteor shower recurs annually between July and August as Earth passes through the comet's dusty tail debris path.
During peak hours, observers can spot up to 60 to 100 meteors per hour travelling at speeds of 59 kilometers per second. When these meteoric fragments vaporize upon entering Earth's upper atmosphere, they produce brilliant streaks of light known as fireballs.
