SEBI study reveals over 90 percent of retail traders in Futures and Options face losses, earning below Rs 5 lakh annually.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India released comprehensive findings on retail participation in the equity derivatives segment. The study highlights that a vast majority of individual traders engaging in Futures and Options (F&O) instruments incur persistent net financial losses.
The analysis comes amid growing regulatory concern over explosive growth in retail participation within high-risk financial derivatives following the pandemic. SEBI has been evaluating structural measures to curb speculative activity and protect small investors from extreme capital erosion in volatile markets.
According to the report, over 90 percent of individual retail traders in the F&O segment sustained losses, with most earning an annual income below Rs 5 lakh. Additionally, the data indicates that a significant demographic of active derivative traders consists of individuals under 30 years of age.
This study is crucial for Economy topics in UPSC (GS Paper III) and Banking exams. Questions can examine SEBI's regulatory framework, financial market risk management, capital market deepening versus speculative trading, and measures to enhance investor protection.
