In Brief
Transitions to digital e-boarding cards for international travellers at immigration counters starting September 1.
In a major digital governance step, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Bureau of Immigration announced that starting September 1, 2026, air travellers flying in and out of India will no longer require physical paper boarding cards at immigration checkpoints. Passengers can present digital e-boarding cards on their mobile devices for verification.
The reform forms part of the government’s broader digitisation drive across international airports, aiming to eliminate redundant physical paperwork and cut processing times at immigration clearance counters. Historically, immigration officers physically stamped paper boarding passes along with passports to verify outbound and inbound passenger credentials, leading to long queues during peak travel hours.
Under the upgraded immigration digital system, travel details will be validated seamlessly by scanning e-boarding passes alongside biometric and passport data stored in central immigration databases. Integrated with the national Civil Aviation framework and DigiYatra initiatives, the system has undergone successful trials across major hubs including Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
This initiative enhances passenger convenience, reduces paper waste, and speeds up border processing while maintaining rigorous national security protocols. For exam candidates, this serves as a practical application of digital governance, modernizing transport infrastructure, and smart border management suitable for SSC General Awareness and UPSC GS Paper II (Governance).
