India to Acquire US Javelin Anti-Tank Missiles for Infantry Modernisation

The Javelin ATGM is a man-portable, fire-and-forget missile system designed to defeat heavy armor through top-attack flight profiles, where the missile strikes a tank's vulnerable roof. India's infantry requires lightweight, high-precision ATGMs for deployment in rugged Himalayan terrain where heavier armored vehicles cannot operate effectively, supplementing existing domestic systems like Nag and MPATGM.

Developed jointly by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, the Javelin system features an infrared seeker that operates effectively in day, night, and adverse weather conditions. The missile possesses an operational range of over 2.5 kilometers and utilizes a tandem shaped-charge warhead designed to penetrate explosive reactive armor (ERA). This purchase marks a significant milestone in expanding Indo-US defense trade beyond standard aviation platforms.

This acquisition reinforces the evolving strategic partnership between New Delhi and Washington.
