In Brief
Bidders for India's polymer banknote pilot must certify 100% tallow-free production and strict foreign cybersecurity safeguards.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) incorporated stringent production parameters in global procurement tenders for polymer currency note substrates. Under the finalized bidding criteria, international suppliers must issue binding certifications ensuring zero animal tallow usage during manufacturing, alongside stringent operational firewalls preventing data or material access to unauthorized foreign jurisdictions, including China and Pakistan.
Polymer banknotes are constructed from synthetic polymer substrates (typically biaxially oriented polypropylene), offering far higher durability, reduced contamination risks, and advanced embedded anti-counterfeiting features compared to traditional cotton-rag paper currency notes. RBI has been planning field trials for polymer banknotes in ₹10 denomination across distinct climatic zones in India.
Key examination facts: Indian currency paper traditionally comprises 100% cotton fiber. Polymer notes extend physical lifespan by 2.5 to 3 times, lowering long-term note printing and replacement expenditures for central banks. Tallow (rendered animal fat) exclusion ensures alignment with cultural and religious sensitivities, resolving controversies faced by polymer notes introduced in other jurisdictions like the UK's Royal Mint.
This policy reflects RBI's operational modernization and currency risk management strategy. It forms an essential topic for Bank PO, SSC, and UPSC Prelims examinations under Monetary Infrastructure, Currency Management, and Indian Banking Systems.
