In Brief
PM Modi inaugurated the Jal Shakti Ministry Summit to strengthen cooperative federalism and review national water management frameworks.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a major two-day national summit hosted by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The summit is designed as the inaugural event in a series of departmental national conferences intended to foster cooperative federalism and execute integrated water management under the 'Team India' spirit.
The Ministry of Jal Shakti was created in May 2019 by integrating two former ministries: the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, and the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. The ministry oversees flagship programs including the Jal Jeevan Mission and National Mission for Clean Ganga.
The summit brought together state water resource ministers, hydrologists, and policy experts to evaluate inter-state river basin management, aquifer mapping, rainwater harvesting progress, and real-time monitoring of groundwater levels using IoT-enabled sensors.
Inter-state water governance is a foundational topic for UPSC GS Paper II (Inter-state river disputes, Article 262) and GS Paper III (Water conservation). SSC and Bank exams frequently test details of central government ministries, flagship schemes, and national targets.
