Government Considers Re-Introducing E10 Fuel Variant Alongside E20 Target

The Union Government is reviewing proposal options to re-introduce E10 (10% ethanol blended with petrol) variants alongside the ongoing national rollout of E20 fuel. Public sector oil marketing companies, supported by inputs from the Chief Economic Advisor, noted that dual-fuel availability would address localized ethanol feedstock shortages and alleviate concerns regarding engine material compatibility in older vehicles.

Under the National Policy on Biofuels, India aggressively advanced its ethanol blending targets, achieving 10% blending in 2022 and setting a target of 20% blending (E20) by 2025-26. Ethanol is primarily derived from sugarcane molasses, damaged food grains, and maize. While blending reduces India's crude oil import bill and lowers carbon emissions, supply fluctuations driven by monsoon variations can strain feedstock supply chains.

According to ministry data, current national ethanol blending levels stand near 15%. Re-introducing E10 at select retail stations ensures continuous supply stability without reverting entirely to pure unblended petrol. Technical evaluations confirm that older BS-IV compliant vehicles experience long-term fuel line degradation when operated exclusively on higher blends like E20 without engine modification kits.
