Union Home Secretary chaired a comprehensive national assessment meeting with administrative officials from Himalayan States and Union Territories to review emergency preparedness against Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). The Centre instructed states to shift from conventional post-disaster response toward proactive hazard mitigation.
High-altitude glacial lakes across the Himalayan mountain range have expanded significantly due to accelerated glacial melting triggered by rising global temperatures. When natural moraine dams holding these lakes breach, millions of cubic meters of water rush downstream, causing catastrophic destruction to infrastructure and human settlements.
The Home Ministry mandated the installation of Automated Weather Stations (AWS), real-time water-level monitoring sensors, and early warning systems across high-risk glacial lakes. Key instructions include completing disaster mapping, establishing community-level response units, and enforcing land-use zoning regulations along river corridors vulnerable to flash floods.
