In Brief
Central drug regulators flag a batch of Abhayrab rabies vaccine as substandard, initiating safety investigations.
Indian drug regulatory authorities flagged a specific batch of 'Abhayrab' rabies vaccine as failing standard quality parameters, initiating a comprehensive investigation to determine if the batch was substandard or counterfeit. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and state drug controllers issued alerts across healthcare networks to halt distribution and audit the supply chain safety of critical anti-rabies immunizations.
Rabies is a fatal viral zoonotic disease transmitted to humans through bites or scratches from infected animals, primarily dogs. Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), which includes timely administration of quality-assured anti-rabies vaccines and immunoglobulins, is 100% effective in preventing death. Substandard vaccine batches compromise human immunity, presenting severe public health risks across primary healthcare centers.
Regulatory enforcement falls under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, executed by CDSCO headed by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). Rabies control forms a major component of the National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP), which targets eliminating dog-mediated rabies from India by the target year 2030, aligned with World Health Organization (WHO) global targets.
Health policy and disease control programs are crucial topics across civil services exams. For Prelims, MCQs regularly test viral diseases, vaccine mechanisms, CDSCO statutory functions, and the 2030 rabies elimination goal. For Mains GS Paper II (Social Justice/Health Governance), this incident serves as a case study on pharmaceutical regulatory oversight, drug quality enforcement, and public health safeguards.
