In Brief
Issues countrywide alert against counterfeit rabies vaccine batches circulating in domestic markets.
The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), India’s apex drug regulatory authority, issued an urgent countrywide alert to all State Drug Controllers regarding counterfeit batches of anti-rabies vaccines detected in domestic distribution channels. CDSCO confirmed that the compromised batch was manufactured fraudulently under a licensed brand name and verified that none of the counterfeit units were exported overseas.
CDSCO operates under the Directorate General of Health Services within the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, deriving regulatory powers from the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945. The regulator is responsible for approving new drugs, conducting clinical trials, setting standards for drug quality, and coordinating state-level drug enforcement to prevent spurious, adulterated, or misbranded pharmaceuticals.
Rabies is a fatal viral zoonotic disease caused by Lyssavirus, transmitted primarily through bites of infected animals like dogs. Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), consisting of anti-rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin, is 100% effective when administered promptly. India accounts for nearly 36% of global rabies deaths, making the integrity of the domestic anti-rabies supply chain critical to achieving the National Action Plan for Dog Mediated Rabies Elimination (NAPRE) by 2030.
This story bridges Public Health, Regulatory Policy, and Science & Technology. Prelims questions frequently target the statutory basis of CDSCO, the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940, viral vector diseases, and NAPRE 2030 targets. Mains GS-Paper II questions on health governance will examine regulatory gaps in pharmaceutical supply chain integrity, track-and-trace QR code enforcement, and public health security against counterfeit medications.
