Announce mandatory Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labeling (FOPNL) by FSSAI CEO to combat non-communicable diseases.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced significant progress toward implementing mandatory Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labeling (FOPNL) across all packaged food items in India. FSSAI CEO Rajit Punhani stated that growing consumer health awareness has accelerated the regulatory enforcement drive, bringing India closer to finalizing mandatory clear display labels for high fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) contents.
FOPNL is a global evidence-based policy intervention aimed at helping consumers make healthier dietary choices to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disorders. In India, packaged food consumption has risen sharply. FSSAI has been drafting regulations for Indian Nutrition Rating (INR) systems, similar to energy star ratings, to categorize packaged foods based on nutritional quality.
The proposed framework mandates easy-to-read warnings on the front of food packages if thresholds for added sugar, saturated fats, and sodium exceed prescribed daily limits. Implementation strategies focus on phased compliance deadlines for food business operators (FBOs) alongside robust lab testing infrastructure to verify manufacturer claims across national supply chains.
This topic falls under public health, consumer protection, and regulatory governance. Candidates preparing for UPSC GS Paper II & III as well as SSC exams should focus on FSSAI's statutory powers under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, FOPNL guidelines, and measures tackling NCDs in India.
