In Brief
Commences the annual fortnight cleanliness drive focusing on public participation and 'Viksit Bharat' alignment.
Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil officially launched the annual fortnight campaign 'Swachhata Hi Seva 2026' across the nation. The nationwide initiative aims to mobilize citizens, local governance bodies, and corporate entities toward intensive sanitation drives, legacy waste cleanup, and institutionalizing cleanliness habits leading up to Gandhi Jayanti.
Launched initially as part of the broader Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) umbrella, the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign acts as a precursor to Gandhi Jayanti. SBM was launched in 2014 to eliminate open defecation and achieve comprehensive solid waste management under two verticals: SBM-Urban and SBM-Gramin.
The primary theme announced for 2026 is 'Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat'. Key focal points include cleaning designated persistent garbage spots, organizing health check-up camps for sanitation workers (Safai Mitras), and promoting circular economy practices across urban and rural local bodies.
The campaign tracks performance metrics under the Viksit Bharat 2047 roadmap, driving civic accountability. For competitive exams, this provides crucial data points for GS Paper II (Governance, Public Policy) and GS Paper III (Solid Waste Management, Environmental Health) as well as SSC scheme questions.
