Settles $150 million debt extended through State Bank of India treasury bills amid financial stabilization.
The Maldivian government has successfully repaid a $150 million financial assistance facility to the State Bank of India (SBI). The treasury bills, originally subscribed by SBI Male branch in 2019 to support the island nation's budget, had been rolled over six times annually before final settlement amid ongoing economic stabilization efforts.
The Maldives faced acute foreign exchange reserve shortages and debt pressures following global economic shocks and shifting regional trade dynamics. India has historically functioned as a first responder and primary economic anchor for the Maldives under its "Neighborhood First" policy, extending currency swap agreements, budget support, and development soft loans.
The repaid $150 million debt was part of a larger $1.4 billion economic support package extended by New Delhi in 2018-2019. SBI's Male operation played a crucial role in underwriting government treasury bills. The full repayment improves the credit outlook of the Maldives and underscores bilateral financial cooperation stability.
This development is central to UPSC International Relations (GS Paper II) and Banking awareness exams. Questions frequently test India’s financial diplomacy mechanisms, line of credit structures, foreign exchange reserve support tools, and India’s strategic interest in maintaining economic stability across Indian Ocean rim partner nations.
