In Brief
Cochin Shipyard Limited delivers INS Mangrol, an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, to the Indian Navy.
Cochin Shipyard Limited officially delivered the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) INS Mangrol to the Indian Navy. The vessel is named after the historical coastal township of Mangrol located in the state of Gujarat.
The delivery forms part of the Indian Navy's broader modernization drive to replace aging Abhay-class corvettes. Built with over 80 percent indigenous content, these vessels enhance coastal defense capabilities and underline national efforts toward self-reliance in defense manufacturing under the Make in India initiative.
INS Mangrol is designed for anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, low-intensity maritime operations, and mine-laying missions. It features advanced sonar systems, lightweight torpedoes, and anti-submarine rockets capable of detecting and neutralizing underwater threats efficiently.
This development holds strong significance for Defence & Security sections in Prelims and Mains (GS Paper III). Aspirants should focus on indigenization of defense technology, operational roles of ASW shallow water crafts, and strategic security along India's coastline.
