Allows digitally signed Power of Attorney documents to streamline and speed up onboarding for Foreign Portfolio Investors.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued a circular permitting the acceptance of digitally signed Power of Attorney (PoA) documents for onboarding Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs). Issued on August 23, 2026, this regulatory change aims to streamline documentation, reduce operational bottlenecks, and enhance ease of doing business for global investors entering Indian capital markets.
Traditionally, foreign investors were required to submit physical, wet-signed, and consularized or apostilled PoA documents to Designated Depository Participants (DDPs) before executing trades in India. This manual verification process often caused significant administrative delays, taking weeks to complete. The shift toward digital authorization forms part of SEBI’s broader digital transformation agenda to modernize market infrastructure.
Under the new guidelines, DDPs and Custodians can accept PoAs executed with verified digital signatures that comply with recognized international encryption standards. This step aligns with the Information Technology Act, 2000, and standardizes cross-border investor verification procedures. Over 10,000 registered FPIs operating in Indian equity and debt market segments stand to benefit from reduced onboarding turnaround times.
Simplifying market entry rules boosts foreign direct and portfolio inflows, enhancing market liquidity and investor confidence in India’s financial architecture. Candidates preparing for UPSC Mains GS Paper III (Economy) and financial sector competitive exams must note this reform as an example of ease of doing business in financial markets and capital market regulatory updates.
