Plan AI-powered smart border architecture and unified command centres to counter cross-border drone smuggling and threats.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has finalized plans to construct high-tech integrated command-and-control centres under an updated "smart border" security architecture. This integrated technological framework aims to strengthen perimeter surveillance and real-time threat response across sensitive international land border regions, particularly targeting highly vulnerable stretches along the India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh international boundaries.
The initiative comes amidst a sharp rise in cross-border security challenges, particularly the unauthorized deployment of low-altitude uncrewed aerial vehicles (drones) for smuggling narcotics, weapons, and forged currency. Physical perimeter fencing often proves inadequate against airborne intrusion across complex terrains, necessitating the immediate transition toward dynamic, sensor-based surveillance systems integrated into the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS) framework.
The smart border command architecture integrates Artificial Intelligence algorithms, thermal imaging cameras, micro-doppler anti-drone radars, underground subterranean acoustic sensors, and high-speed optical cables into centralized command posts managed by border guarding forces like the Border Security Force (BSF). These unified command hubs allow security personnel to instantly detect, track, and neutralize unauthorized cross-border movements.
Enhancing technological coverage along international frontiers reduces human patrolling hazards in difficult terrains like riverine belts and mountainous corridors. For UPSC and SSC aspirants, Prelims questions can test CIBMS technology components, border guarding agency mandates, and border geography, while Mains GS Paper III questions will focus on internal security management, smart border defense solutions, and counter-drone warfare strategies.
