Issue white paper highlighting a 61% drop in Darjeeling tea production and demanding government revival packages for Dooars.
The Indian Tea Association (ITA) has released a comprehensive white paper detailing a severe economic and operational crisis crippling the historic Darjeeling, Dooars, and Terai tea sectors. The industry body has appealed for immediate state intervention and dedicated central government financial relief packages to prevent widespread garden closures across North Bengal's rural economy.
Darjeeling tea holds landmark economic significance as India's very first Geographical Indication (GI) tagged product, awarded back in 2004 due to its distinct muscatel flavor and high global demand. However, a compounding mix of changing climatic patterns, aging tea bushes, rising wage structures, declining export demand, and cheap uncertified imports from Nepal has eroded the sector's financial stability.
Key figures highlighted in the ITA white paper paint a stark picture: Darjeeling's total tea production plummeted by over 61 percent, dropping from 14.49 million kilograms in 1990 down to just 5.6 million kilograms in 2025. Concurrently, tea gardens across the Dooars and Terai plains face depressed auction prices, threatening the economic livelihood of over 350,000 direct plantation workers.
The white paper highlights urgent vulnerabilities within India's traditional plantation sectors and intellectual property protections. For competitive examinations, Prelims questions can test GI tag regulations, tea crop agro-climatic requirements, and regional geography, while Mains GS Paper III questions will evaluate plantation economics, agricultural distress, and international trade safeguards for protected domestic GI products.
