In Brief
Protests construction activities on Chennai's Pallikaranai Marshland, highlighting threats to its Ramsar ecosystem.
Environmental activists and local community groups in Tamil Nadu raised urgent demands to halt unauthorized construction and infrastructure encroachment on the Pallikaranai Marshland in Chennai. The marshland, recognized internationally as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, faces ecological stress from urban expansion, waste dumping, and continuous alteration of its natural hydrological flow patterns.
Pallikaranai is one of the few surviving natural freshwater marsh ecosystems in South India and serves as a vital ecological buffer against urban flooding in Chennai. Encroachments impair the marsh's natural water retention capacity, worsening seasonal flood risks and destroying unique habitats critical for resident and migratory bird species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
Designated as a Ramsar site in July 2022 under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (1971), Pallikaranai covers approximately 700 hectares of protected wetland area. The ecosystem supports over 115 bird species, including the spot-billed pelican and pheasant-tailed jacana, alongside diverse flora and amphibian species. Wetlands in India are regulated under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017.
Environment and Ecology form a high-yield segment for competitive examinations. In Prelims, questions routinely ask about Ramsar sites, wetland ecology rules, and biodiversity hotspots in Tamil Nadu. In Mains GS Paper III (Environment/Disaster Management), this news illustrates urban wetland degradation, urban flood management, biodiversity conservation, and execution challenges of environmental protection laws.
