Approved PM Surya Sarovar Yojana targeting 5,000 MW of floating solar power capacity across water bodies by 2030-31.
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana to accelerate the installation of floating solar power plants across major water bodies in India. The scheme aims to achieve a total installed capacity of 5,000 MW by the financial year 2030-31.
Floating solar installations present a strategic alternative to land-intensive renewable energy projects. By deploying photovoltaic panels on water reservoirs, lakes, and ponds, the initiative saves critical land resources while reducing water evaporation loss and boosting panel efficiency due to natural water cooling.
Key highlights of the initiative include targeting 5,000 MW installation by 2030-31 with viability gap funding support from the Central government. State water resource departments, public sector utilities, and private developers will collaborate to map suitable water bodies, leveraging advanced anchor-mooring floating PV technology.
The scheme aligns with India's ambitious commitment to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. For exam candidates, this is crucial for UPSC Prelims under Environment and Schemes, and Mains GS Paper 3 regarding energy security and sustainable infrastructure.
