Issued compliance notices forcing major food business operators to rectify product labeling and quality standards.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced that several leading consumer brands and Food Business Operators (FBOs) have initiated immediate corrective measures following statutory notices issued by the apex food regulator. The regulatory action follows nationwide inspections that identified non-compliance in product labeling, ingredient disclosures, and safety testing standards.
FSSAI operates as an autonomous statutory body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare pursuant to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The regulator consolidates various historical food laws to set science-based standards for food manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure the availability of safe food for human consumption.
The corrective steps taken by FBOs involve revising packaging labels, removing misleading health claims, recalibrating processing parameters, and updating consumer information panels. FSSAI reiterated that continued default by food businesses attracts civil penalties, license suspensions, and legal prosecution under statutory guidelines.
This news is relevant for UPSC GS Paper 2 (Statutory Bodies & Governance) and SSC/Railway science and health modules. Important concepts to remember include the mandate of FSSAI under the FSS Act 2006, consumer rights, food fortification standards, and regulatory mechanisms governing food safety in India.
