Centre reports E20 petrol saved consumers nearly ₹30 per litre during global crude price spikes while reducing import bills.
The Central Government clarified that the national rollout of E20 petrol (20% ethanol blended with 80% petrol) saved domestic consumers nearly ₹30 per litre during recent spikes in international crude oil prices, while significantly reducing foreign exchange outflow.
India launched the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme to reduce dependency on imported crude oil, lower carbon emissions, and provide economic support to sugarcane and grain farmers. Under the National Policy on Biofuels, India advanced its target of achieving 20% ethanol blending in petrol from 2030 to the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Government data indicates that ethanol blending has helped save over ₹1 lakh crore in foreign exchange over the past decade while substantially reducing carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions from motor vehicles. E20 fuel availability has now expanded across thousands of retail outlets nationwide.
Biofuel policies sit at the intersection of energy security, climate action, and agricultural economics. For aspirants, this update is critical for UPSC Prelims questions on the National Policy on Biofuels and blending targets, as well as Mains GS-III discussions on renewable energy and import substitution strategies.
