In Brief
Tamil Nadu government increases credit allocations under Singapengal Scheme and mandates 30% loan allocation across categories.
The Tamil Nadu state government directed cooperative lending institutions to increase loan allocations under the Singapengal Entrepreneurship Credit Scheme by 25%. Additionally, official directives mandated that at least 30% of overall institutional credit across categories be earmarked for women entrepreneurs.
The scheme was introduced to promote financial inclusion, self-reliance, and women-led micro-enterprises. Access to formal credit remains a critical structural bottleneck for women-owned micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across rural and urban economies.
The directive enhances micro-credit disbursement targets through cooperative banks, targeting financial assistance for women self-help groups (SHGs) and independent female business owners across all districts in Tamil Nadu.
State-level economic empowerment models, financial inclusion initiatives, and women-oriented development schemes are highly relevant for UPSC GS Paper II & III, as well as RBI Grade B and NABARD development management sections.
