In Brief
Chhattisgarh state forest department launches targeted conservation and breeding drive for endangered wild water buffaloes.
The Chhattisgarh state government launched an emergency biological conservation campaign to protect its critical remaining population of the wild water buffalo (Bubalus arnee). Habitat loss, genetic pollution from domestic cattle, and diseases have pushed the state animal to the verge of regional extinction.
The wild water buffalo is designated as 'Endangered' on the IUCN Red List and listed under Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. It is also the official state animal of Chhattisgarh, with primary habitats concentrated in Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve and Indravati National Park.
Key conservation strategies include ex-situ breeding projects, strict habitat protection, genetic purity testing, and community-based anti-poaching measures to prevent cross-breeding with domestic livestock.
Biodiversity conservation, IUCN status, endangered species, and wildlife protection legal frameworks are core focus areas for UPSC Prelims Environment section and SSC GS papers.
