Directs Centre to conduct a national survey to remove obstructions from elephant corridors and bans firecrackers near routes.
The Supreme Court of India ruled that no state government or private entity has the authority to block traditional migration routes used by wild elephants. A bench headed by the Apex Court emphasized that impeding elephant corridors is an unsustainable approach to resolving human-animal conflict. The court directed the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to conduct a comprehensive national survey to identify and clear all illegal encroachments along designated corridors across the country.
Elephant corridors are narrow strips of natural habitat that connect two larger wildlife reserves, allowing Asian elephants to migrate seasonally for food, water, and breeding. Expanding infrastructure, railways, commercial resorts, and agricultural land have severely fragmented these ecological pathways. Under Article 48A of the Constitution, the State is obligated to protect wildlife, while Section 35 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, empowers authorities to secure protected zones and connectivity zones for endangered fauna.
India is home to over 60 percent of the world's wild Asian elephant population, estimated at roughly 27,000 individuals according to the latest census. The Wildlife Trust of India has identified 101 crucial elephant corridors across five major regions: South, East-Central, North-East, Northern, and Western Ghats. The court also banned the use of firecrackers and spiked fences near elephant movements, which cause severe injuries and retaliatory attacks.
This judgment strengthens ecological jurisprudence and prioritizes wildlife connectivity over unchecked infrastructure expansion. For aspirants, this news is highly relevant for UPSC Prelims under Environment and Ecology, and Mains General Studies Paper III covering Biodiversity Conservation, Wildlife Protection Act, and Human-Wildlife Conflict mitigation strategies.
