Environmental study highlights atmospheric pollutant accumulation forming destructive black gypsum crusts on Delhi monument.
A scientific conservation report revealed that severe atmospheric air pollution in New Delhi is causing structural decay known as black crust formation on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Humayun's Tomb. Researchers found that sulfur dioxide emissions, airborne particulate matter, and vehicular exhaust react chemically with red sandstone and white marble surfaces, depositing harmful encrustations on the historical monument.
Humayun's Tomb, constructed in 1570 under the patronage of Empress Bega Begum, represents the first major garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent and served as architectural inspiration for the Taj Mahal. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, the monument is officially protected by the Archaeological Survey of India under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
Chemically, black crusts form when atmospheric sulfur dioxide reacts with calcium carbonate present in building stones to produce calcium sulfate or gypsum. This gypsum matrix traps elemental carbon, soot, and heavy metal particles from PM2.5 and PM10 pollution. Over time, moisture variations cause these crusts to expand, blister, and exfoliate, eroding intricate carving details and weakening structural masonry.
The degradation of national heritage highlights the direct environmental costs of urban air pollution and inadequate micro-climate management. For civil services aspirants, this topic is highly relevant for GS Paper 1 History and Art Architecture, GS Paper 3 Environment and Pollution Control, as well as Prelims MCQs focusing on UNESCO heritage sites, ASI mandates, and atmospheric chemical processes.
