In Brief
Expose severe health risks in Uttar Pradesh as heavy industrial dumping contaminates groundwater with Hexavalent Chromium.
Decades of unregulated industrial effluent discharge have severely contaminated groundwater across three districts in Uttar Pradesh, causing tube well water to glow yellow-green due to high concentrations of Hexavalent Chromium. Local residents in these affected agricultural belts report acute health complications, including chronic kidney ailments, skin disorders, and gastrointestinal diseases, due to consuming contaminated water drawn from shallow aquifers.
Hexavalent Chromium, or Chromium VI, is a highly toxic, carcinogenic chemical compound commonly generated during industrial processes such as leather tanning, electroplating, and chemical manufacturing. Unlike trivalent chromium, which is an essential human nutrient in trace quantities, the hexavalent form easily dissolves in water, penetrates deep soil strata, and bioaccumulates in human tissues, posing severe environmental toxicity and irreversible health damage.
Environmental testing reveals that Chromium VI levels in the affected districts exceed the permissible drinking water standards established by the Bureau of Indian Standards and World Health Organization by several hundred times. The permissible limit for total chromium in drinking water is 0.05 milligrams per liter, whereas soil and water samples collected from industrial dumping grounds displayed hazardous chemical saturation levels.
This news story is vital for Civil Services examination preparation under General Studies Paper Three, covering environmental pollution, heavy metal toxicity, and public health policies. Examiners frequently ask questions regarding industrial effluent management, the provisions of the Water Pollution Act of 1974, Central Pollution Control Board norms, and bioremediation techniques used to clear heavy metals.
