The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority announced plans to install Early Warning Systems (EWS) across 13 high-risk glacial lakes. This decision follows a devastating glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) and hanging glacier collapse in the Nepal-China border region, which triggered severe downstream flooding across North India and highlighted the heightened vulnerability of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
Glacial Lake Outburst Floods occur when natural moraine or ice dams holding back glacial meltwater collapse suddenly due to landslides, avalanches, or earthquakes. In recent years, northern India has witnessed catastrophic GLOF events, including the 2013 Kedarnath disaster, the 2021 Chamoli flash floods, and the 2023 South Lhonak lake outburst in Sikkim. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has repeatedly urged Himalayan states to strengthen real-time monitoring infrastructure to mitigate downstream risks.
Out of over 1,000 glacial lakes identified in Uttarakhand, scientists from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology and ISRO categorized 13 as high-risk. Sensor arrays, automatic weather stations, and water-level monitors will transmit real-time telemetry to central control hubs. The installation aims to provide downstream communities with critical lead time ranging from 30 to 90 minutes during sudden discharge events.
