Deploy S-400 Sudarshan missile system to secure airspace and neutralize advanced aerial threats during high-alert operations.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) underscored the critical operational capabilities of the Russian-origin S-400 Triumf air defence missile system, officially designated as 'Sudarshan' in Indian service. Senior IAF commanders revealed that the system successfully countered electronic warfare and surveillance threats during recent high-alert border operations codenamed Operation Sindoor.
India signed a $5.43 billion contract with Russia in October 2018 to acquire five squadrons of the S-400 surface-to-air missile system. Despite international geopolitical sanctions and supply chain disruptions, India has taken delivery of three operational squadrons, deploying them along key northern and western borders to create multi-layered air defence umbrellas against enemy fighters, ballistic missiles, and drone swarms.
The S-400 Sudarshan is considered one of the world's most advanced mobile SAM systems, capable of tracking up to 300 targets simultaneously and engaging them at ranges up to 400 kilometers and altitudes up to 30 kilometers. It utilizes four distinct missile types—40N6E, 48N6, 9M96E2, and 9M96E—to engage targets across ultra-long to short ranges, providing integrated layered protection.
