In Brief
Food safety authority orders spirits manufacturers to stop using artificial maturation flavours on liquor labels.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India issued a stern regulatory directive targeting domestic alcoholic beverage manufacturers using synthetic added flavours in rum and whisky production. FSSAI instructed beverage companies to immediately eliminate deceptive labelling practices where artificial chemical flavorings are substituted for genuine wood barrel maturation processes without transparent disclosures to consumer markets.
Operating as an autonomous statutory authority established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, FSSAI functions under the administrative control of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The apex regulatory body sets science-based standards for articles of food and regulates their domestic manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure safe, wholesome food consumption nationwide.
According to the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, dark spirits such as whisky and rum are defined by traditional distillation and oak cask aging processes. FSSAI flagged that adding artificial aroma compounds to simulate natural maturation violates standards under Section 23 of the 2006 Act, which prohibits misleading labeling, false advertising, and deceptive packaging claims.
This strong enforcement action strengthens general consumer rights and maintains international quality parity for Indian spirit exports worldwide. Candidates preparing for UPSC and state public service exams should note FSSAI's statutory mandates and enforcement mechanisms for Prelims MCQs, while using this development as a practical case study for Mains topics related to administrative governance, public health standards, and corporate compliance.
